Phi Theta Kappa’s Alpha Psi Epsilon Chapter Hosts Pacific Regional and Leadership Honors Conference
Hawai'i Community College's Alpha Psi Epsilon Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society hosted the Fall 2019 Pacific Regional Leadership and Honors Conference on October 5 and 6, 2019. Phi Theta Kappa students and advisors from Hawai‘i CC, Honolulu CC, Kapi‘olani CC, Kaua‘i CC, Leeward CC, and Waipahu High School’s Early College program participated in an informative, stimulating, and fun-filled weekend. Attendees learned about Phi Theta Kappa programs and initiatives, about developing leadership skills and about the Honors Topic, “Transformations: Acknowledging, Assessing and Achieving Change.”
On Saturday, Chancellor Rachel Solemsaas welcomed the conference attendees to the Manono Campus, and Hawai‘i CC alumna, and life coach, Janice Ikeda delivered an inspirational keynote address. After lunch, the group visited the ‘Imiloa Astronomy Center. They later returned to the Manono campus for discussions on how the various themes within the Honors Topic related to ‘Imiloa, Mauna Kea and the proposed Thirty Meter Telescope.
On Sunday, the Pacific Regional Officers presented on Competitive Edge (a professional portfolio website only open to members), the College Project, the Five Star Chapter Development Plan, REACH rewards, and Honors in Action. International Division III Vice President, Tyler McKenzie also facilitated two leadership development activities.
Hawai‘i CC students Gabriel Navalta (Regional Vice President) and Paul Santoro Jr. (Chapter President), and Regional Coordinator, Erin Millard presented on their experiences attending the PTK International Honors Summer Institute in San Diego, California. Gabriel presented on Crystal Chissell, Paul presented on Old Town San Diego, and Erin presented on Sue Reynolds. Presenters also incorporated a group activity within their presentations. The second day ended with all groups (even the advisors) performing skits related to the Honors Topic themes. Nearly all of the skits were inspired by what is happening on Mauna Kea. It was a transformative weekend!
