FIRE SCIENCE PROGRAM NOW AVAILABLE AT HAWAI‘I COMMUNITY COLLEGE – PĀLAMANUI

Hawai‘i Community College (Hawai‘i CC) is pleased to announce it will begin delivering its Fire Science program at the Hawai‘i CC – Pālamanui campus in Kona starting in the fall 2017 semester.

Hawai‘i CC began offering an Associate of Science in Fire Science in Hilo in 2005. It has become one of the most popular academic programs with 110 Fire Science majors currently enrolled.

STUDENTS FROM SEVERAL PROGRAMS COLLABORATE ON TASTY PASTA GIVEAWAY PROJECT

The Arugula Pesto Pasta Giveaway on April 17, a unique collaboration between students in several academic programs, was a fun, healthy success that led to 60 students getting a free entrée.

The project sprouted from the Hawai‘i Student Success Institute after Agriculture Instructor Lew Nakamura, English Instructor Sharon Dansereau, Associate Professor of Art Meidor Hu, and Counselor Karen Crowell attended a workshop on seed sharing.

EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION PROGRAM HOLDS ANNUAL CONFERENCE

The Hawai'i CC Early Childhood Education (ECE) program hosted its 4th Annual Mary Goya Conference last month, named after retired professor and founder of the ECE program Mary Goya.

The conference provides an opportunity for members of the local childcare community to convene. Approximately 50 people attended this year. Current Hawai'i CC ECE students helped organize the conference as part of their service learning for their upper-level classes. The conference gives current students an opportunity to network with potential employers.

JCCIH DONATION TO BENEFIT HAWAI'I CC STUDENTS

At a mahalo luncheon last month, members of the Japanese Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Hawai‘i presented a check for $10,000 to Hawai‘i Community College. This generous donation was made using proceeds from the 18th Annual “A Taste of Hilo” that took place in October 2016.

NATURAL SCIENCE DEGREE AVAILABLE AT PĀLAMANUI STARTING IN FALL 2017; SCHOLARSHIPS AVAILABLE

Hawai‘i Community College is pleased to announce it will begin offering an Associate of Science in Natural Science (ASNS) degree at the Pālamanui campus in Kailua-Kona beginning in the Fall 2017 semester.

PHI THETA KAPPA ALPHA PSI EPSILON CHAPTER INDUCTS NEW MEMBERS

On Saturday, March 25, 2017, Phi Theta Kappa’s Alpha Psi Epsilon chapter in Hilo conducted its formal Spring 2017 Induction Ceremonies. Vice President of Membership Charles Bauguess served as Induction Chairperson, and Chapter President Nicholas Eisen served as the Master of Ceremonies. English Lecturer Rebecca Jacobs delivered the keynote address. Chancellor Rachel Solemsaas, Vice Chancellor Joni Onishi and Interim Vice Chancellor Dorinna Manuel-Cortez celebrated with the inductees and their families. HAWAI‘I CC’S PHI THETA KAPPA WINS BIG AT THE 2017 REGIONAL CONVENTION

Hawai‘i Community College’s Alpha Psi Epsilon Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society attended the 2017 Pacific Regional Convention at Kapi‘olani Community College where they were recognized with chapter and individual awards.  These awards included:

ANNE CHUNG RECEIVES OUTSTANDING BUSINESS EDUCATOR AWARD FROM WESTERN BUSINESS EDUCATION ASSOCIATION

This year, the Western Business Education Association (WBEA) conference was held in Bozeman, Montana. Assistant Professor in Business Technology, Anne Chung, received the Outstanding Business Educator Award for Post-Secondary Education. Anne has been Hawaiʻi CC's Business Technology (BTEC) faculty and program coordinator for the past seven years. She has been a member of the BTEC Program Coordinating Council (state-wide committee) for several years. She is a knowledgable and inspirational business educator, as well as a leader in the state of Hawaiʻi. Congratulations, Anne!
