Information for Out of State Students

Students from all states are welcome to apply to Hawai‘i Community College (Hawai‘i CC). Hawai‘i CC is a member of the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA). This authorizes us to offer distance education to students in member states without seeking individual state’s approval.

Lamakū Information

As a DE student, the most important tool you will need to access and use is Lamakū. Lamakū is the official online collaboration and learning environment of the University of Hawaiʻi system. Course material, testing, and communication are mainly delivered through Lamakū for online classes. In addition, some instructors will use Lamakū to supplement instruction in ITV, cable, and even face-to-face classes.

Registering for a DE Class

What’s offered?

As a Hawai‘i Community College student, you can register for a DE class offered through your home campus, or through any of the other six UHCC campuses (Honolulu, Kapiolani, Leeward, Windward, Maui, and Kauai), as long as you meet the course and program requirements for that class. Check with your counselor or the Admissions and Records Office if you have questions or special circumstances (e.g. you only want to take DE classes or have questions about credit transferability).

What is DE?

Distance education classes are classes where the instructor and students are separated by distance and/or time.

Distance Education

Distance education (DE) classes provide students the flexibility to complete coursework outside of the traditional classroom setting. Hawai‘i Community College (Hawai‘i CC) has partnered with other University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges to offer a variety of DE classes to meet the needs of students. In addition to the courses offered at Hawai‘i CC, Hawai‘i CC students are able to enroll in DE classes from all other UH Community Colleges (UHCC).
