LIVE MUSIC, FOOD AND MORE AT THE PĀLAMANUI OPEN HOUSE & GRAND OPENING CELEBRATION ON SATURDAY, FEB. 27

Hawai‘i Community College – Pālamanui is pleased to announce that it will host an Open House and Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the new campus in North Kona. “Pālamanui opened for classes in August 2015, and now we are excited to welcome the community to the campus for a fun and celebratory event,” said Dr. Kenneth “Marty” Fletcher, the Director of Hawai‘i CC – Pālamanui. “Residents of West Hawai‘i worked very hard to turn the vision of this campus into a reality. We look forward to introducing them to their new home for higher education.”

The Open House and Grand Opening Celebration is free and open to the public. The event will include live performances by:

  • Award-winning musician and singer Robi Kahakalau.
  • Hawai‘i-based reggae band The Steppas.
  • Contemporary Hawaiian musicians the Keawe Trio.
  • Polynesian cultural group Te 'E’a o Te Turama.

Other highlights include:

  • Cooking demonstrations by the college's Culinary Arts program (samples and light refreshments included!)
  • Campus tours.
  • Performances by talented students.
  • Informational booths presented by the college programs and community partners.

Location

Hawai'i Community College – Pālamanui is located mauka of the Kona International Airport. Access the campus off Ka'iminani Drive in North Kona. Turn north off Ka'iminani Drive by the fire station, directly across from Ane Keohokalole Highway and proceed approximately 1.2 miles until you reach the campus. The Steppas

These island musicians have completed four full-length tours in over 22 states and 60 U.S. cities, and their music has gone as high as #1 on the iTunes raggae chart and #2 on the U.S. Billboard raggae chart.

Robi Kahakalau and the Keawe Trio

photo of Robi KahakalauRobi Kahakalau is a renowned singer and musician whose body of work began when she was 19. She has been honored with a Hawaiian Music Award, three Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards and a Grammy Award nomination. She has performed at New York’s Carnegie Hall, enthralled audiences during more than 23 international tours and is the lead singer for The Hawaiian Style Band. The singer is active in the language revitalization movement and earned a bachelor’s degree in the Hawaiian language and a certificate to teach the language in secondary schools from the University of Hawai'i. The Keawe Trio performs a unique blend of traditional Hawaiian mele in a contemporary island style.

 

 

Te `E`a o Te Turama

photo of Te 'E'a o Te TuramaTe `E`a o Te Turama is committed to the perpetuation and preservation of the culture, history and heritage of the Maoli of Hawai`i, Maohi of Tahiti, Maori of New Zealand and the Natives of Samoa. Through the cultural practice of education, activities and presentations, they strive to connect with families and individuals in hopes of achieving cultural awareness.

 


 

 

About Hawai‘i CC – Pālamanui

Hawai‘i CC – Pālamanui is a branch campus of Hawai‘i Community College and part of the University of Hawai‘i system. It is located in North Kona, mauka of the Kona International Airport.

Hawai‘i CC – Pālamanui offers certificates and associate degrees from Hawai'i Community College. The campus includes the University of Hawai‘i Center, West Hawai'i. The Center is a gateway for residents of West Hawai‘i to undertake programs from other University of Hawai‘i campuses while continuing to live in West Hawai‘i. Programs from other UH campuses enroll and deliver courses to students in West Hawai'i using a combination of formats including: online any-time, site-to-site real-time interactive video conferencing, and face-to-face participation. Local students have the advantage of campus-based resources and support (library, counseling, student activities) plus the opportunity to access an entire spectrum of associate, bachelor's and graduate degrees.
