INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY PROGRAM LAUNCHING ʻGIRLS WHO CODEʻ WORKSHOPS FOR MIDDLE AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS

Hawai'i Community College is hosting a series of free computer science workshops designed for girls in grades 6 through 12. The workshops are being led by Carrie Butler, an instructor in Hawai'i CC's Information Technology program, and are affiliated the national nonprofit organization "Girls Who Code."

"Many IT jobs are currently in demand and are projected to be in the future," said Butler. "There is a much higher percentage of males working in computer and technology-related jobs than females. We are seeking to address this gap by getting girls interested in coding and other areas of IT in a safe, supportive, and fun environment."

The workshops will be held Wednesdays starting February 7 from 5 - 6:30 p.m. in Building 346, Classroom 136 on the University of Hawai'i at Hilo's campus. To reserve a seat in this workshop, or if you have questions, contact Carrie Butler at (808) 934-2545 or cjbutler@hawaii.edu. Space is limited.
