Writing Intensive Course Proposal Procedures

The next deadline for WI designation proposals (new and renewing) is Monday, February 5, 2024 (to be designated in time for Summer '24 or Fall '24)

Note to instructors: Courses with a Foundations designation (FQ, FG, FW) are not eligible for WI designation. Contact your department for updated information on Foundations proposals that may affect your course.

  1. The WI Coordinator will issue a call for proposals at the beginning of each semester (for courses scheduled to be offered in the following semester or later).
  2. The Division Chair or WI committee members will direct instructors to the materials below:
  3. Instructors seeking WI designation for their courses should complete the Application for Writing Intensive (WI) Designation for New Course Proposals and Renewals via Kuali and attach a syllabus and other supporting materials to show that the course meets the WI guidelines. Note: Once you begin a proposal, you can save work to return later. To retrieve your saved draft, go to the main UH Kuali Build page (not the application link), log in with UH credentials, and find your draft under the Submissions tab at the top (you can find your in-progress drafts and submitted proposals there).
  4. Once submitted, the proposal will go to the appropriate Department Chair; if approved, it will continue to the WI Coordinator, who will share the proposal, syllabus, and supporting materials with the WI committee for review.
  5. The WI committee and the Department Chair will follow these guidelines when approving courses:
    • Both the proposed course and instructor must be approved for a WI course designation. (ENG 204W: Creative Writing and ENG 215: Research Writing - Hum/SSCI are designated at the course level.)
    • Lecturers may propose writing intensive courses, but actual scheduling of courses is dependent on availability of funds.
  6. The WI committee will promptly review all WI course proposals and syllabi to make sure that they meet the established WI guidelines according to the Evaluation Procedures for WI Courses (link above) and Checklist for Proposals.
  7. Recommendations for approval will be forwarded to the:
    • Instructor
    • Department Chair
    • Dean
    • Faculty Senate via the Senate Chair
    • Curriculum support staff
  8. Once approved, the course and instructor will be added to the Active WI Course List.
  9. Department chairs and deans will work with instructors to decide which active WI courses to offer as WI each semester and will schedule accordingly.
  10. At the end of each semester, students and instructors will submit evaluation surveys for each WI course.
  11. If a WI course on the Active List has not been offered for five years, the course/instructor will be removed from the list. Active courses nearing their 5-year renewal deadline may be renewed using the abbreviated version of the proposal form.
