Onsite Wastewater Treatment Systems Specialist

 

Designed to equip students to work alongside engineers, operators, maintainers, and installers, and prepare them for multiple careers in the wastewater industry by providing hands-on training and technical expertise required for working within this field. Students will gain valuable experience and knowledge in wastewater management, environmental and physical sciences, sustainability, and project based learning that includes conducting site assessments, evaluating onsite wastewater system (OWS) options, preparing permit applications, and using computer-aided design (CAD) software. In addition to foundational coursework, the certificate will culminate in a capstone experience where students working in teams will provide local homeowners with a sanitation assessment culminating with engineering design drawings and reports detailing the best suited OWS for their property.

PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES

Upon successful completion, students are prepared to:

  • Demonstrate understanding of the function, interrelationships, and limits of human activities and natural systems as applied to onsite wastewater systems in island settings.
  • Demonstrate understanding of the analysis, design, revision, and construction of onsite wastewater treatment systems utilizing prior knowledge, research, and other resources.
  • Analyze the technological, economic, ethical, and legal infrastructure as it relates to the study and/or application of wastewater treatment processes.
  • Demonstrate the application of communication, critical thinking, research, and problem-solving skills to address issues affecting the removal and replacement of cesspools.
  • Apply learned skills and demonstrate academic knowledge pertinent to real world situations through engagement with stakeholders.
