Open Educational Resources at Hawai’i Community College
What is OER?
Open Educational Resources (OER) are free ($0). They are instructional materials - textbooks, lesson plans, etc. - that are free to use and can be adapted, so instructors and students can teach and learn and save money!
Watch this video for a quick introduction to OER and why we should be using OER in our classes.
Open Educational Resources (OER) are any kind of teaching and learning materials that you may freely use and reuse at no cost, and without needing to ask permission. Unlike copyrighted resources, OER have been authored or created by an individual or organization that chooses to retain few, if any, ownership rights.

Examples of OER can include: |

|
In some cases, that means you can download a resource and share it with colleagues and students. In other cases, you may be able to download a resource, edit it in some way, and then re-post it as a remixed work. How do you know your options? OER often have Creative Commons licenses or other stated permissions to let you know how the material may be used, reused, adapted, and shared.
Textbook Cost Zero
“Textbook Cost: $0” (TCZ) is related to OER but not exactly the same.
It is a designation that can be used in the Class Availability listing to inform students that a class has no costs for textbooks or other course materials. These materials may or may not be OER as described above. Click here for more information about TCZ.
