Cathryn Krueger found her passion at Hawaiʻi Community College.

“When I took my first agriculture class, everything in my life changed,” said Krueger, who is Native Hawaiian. “I just fell in love with being in agriculture and working with the land.”

The TEAM program focuses education on both traditional and modern field techniques to ensure students understand the fundamentals of field work and are competitive in today’s job market.

Second-year TEAM student Tiala Kailianu-Carvalho uses a clinometer to measure the height of a tree. Hawai‘i CC is the only college in Hawai‘i that trains undergraduates for doing conservation work after an Associate of Science degree.
A TEAM student uses a densiometer (a handheld convex mirror) to measure the canopy cover. Traditional skills such as compass navigation and plant identification, along with the integration of Hawaiian cultural knowledge into forest management, are important skills taught in the TEAM program.

As the only program of its kind in the University of Hawai‘i’s community college system, the TEAM program plays a vital role in training local students for careers in conservation and natural resource management in Hawai‘i.
