SEXUAL ASSAULT PREVENTION:
Acquaintance Rape
- Know the person you’re going out with; if a TRUSTED friend recommends the person, go out in a group for first date
- Meet in a public place
- Arrange your own transportation
- Make your limits CLEAR – “no” means NO!
- Tell someone where you’re going and who you’re meeting
- Avoid excessive alcohol use – do NOT lose control
- Don’t leave your drink alone (if you do – order a fresh drink upon returning); don’t drink anything you didn’t get or open yourself
IF SEXUALLY ASSAULTED: Do not feel guilty - you did nothing wrong
- Tell someone immediately/Report the incident to Campus Security, Police, Emergency Room, etc.
- Contact a faculty/staff member
- Get medical attention
- Consider counseling, whether or not you think you need it
TIPS TO PREVENT LOSS OF PROPERTY:
- Do not leave valuables alone and unprotected
- Mark all electronics and valuables (etching, indelible marker)
- Record all serial and model numbers
- Install a tracking system on computers
- Lock your valuables up
- Install a computer cable lock to keep your computer locked down (for employee and student computers)
- Protect personal information on your computer
- Report missing items immediately
- Photocopy all your personal documents in your purse or wallet and keep the photocopy in a safe place
- Report lost ID badge immediately
- Do not leave your office/room, even for a moment, unless it is locked
- Do not leave valuables visible in a vehicle
- Report suspicious people or activities to Campus Security immediately
- Report malfunctioning locks to Campus Security and/or Maintenance
TIPS FOR PERSONAL SAFETY:
- Know the nearest fire escape route
- Be aware of what is going on around you
- Avoid going out alone (a lion attacks the weak, young or sick), so do the two-legged predators
- If you MUST go out alone – stay in sight or yelling distance of people
- Use busy (people or cars) streets –do not take so called short cuts
- Walk in center of sidewalk
- If a stranger wants to talk, state “I’m meeting someone,” and continue walking
- Walk CONFIDENTLY, with head up and shoulders back
- Make eye contact, so the person(s) know you are aware of them
- If you feel the need: “Yell, Scream, Cause a Scene” (Perpetrators do not want extra attention.)
- Be constantly aware of your surroundings
- Trust your instincts and act on them
