30TH ANNUAL CHRISTMAS WITH THE CHEFS TO RAISE MONEY FOR CULINARY ARTS SCHOLARSHIPS

Kick off the holiday season and celebrate the 30th year of the festive Christmas with the Chefs, Saturday, Dec.1. The annual gala is on the seaside grounds of Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel from 5:30-8 p.m.

Members of the American Culinary Federation Kona Kohala Chefs Associationwill delight attendees with plates of expertly prepared savory cuisine and delectable holiday treats—all accompanied by handcrafted ales, choice wines and 100 percent Kona coffee.

Four Hawai'i Community College Nursing students received scholarships from the Kona Community Hospital Auxiliary in August. 

HAWAI‘I CC STEM STUDENTS GAIN EXPERIENCE IN ASTRONOMY SECTOR

Three Hawaiʻi Community College students put their science and technology skills to use in the astronomy sector this summer as part of the Akamai Workforce Initiative. The student internships culminated in community presentations of their projects on August 9 and 10 on Hawaiʻi Island.

AT UPCOMING WORKSHOP, SUCCESSFUL ALUMNI TO DISCUSS EXPERIENCES IN ONLINE UNIVERSITY DEGREE PROGRAMS

West Hawai‘i residents interested in earning a college degree online from a University of Hawai‘i campus can get the inside scoop from successful alumni during a workshop later this month.

The workshop, hosted by the University Center, West Hawai‘i, is titled “Getting Your Degree Online? YES, it’s Doable!” and takes place Wednesday, Sept. 19 from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. in Koali 107 at the Hawai‘i Community College – Pālamanui campus in North Kona.

BAMBOO RIDGE POETRY READING: WHAT WE MUST REMEMBER

Poets Christy Passion, Ann Inoshita, Juliet Kono and Jean Yamasaki Toyama will read from their work that revisits the 1932 kidnapping and murder of Native Hawaiian prize fighter Joseph Kahahawai and the events surrounding it, commonly known as “The Massie Case.” The poetry reading will be followed by a Q&A.

This event is free and open to the public. All are welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served.

NEW LAW MAKES HAWAI'I CC AND ALL OTHER UH CAMPUSES TOBACCO FREE

A new law signed on July 10 (SB 134, Act 160, SLH 2018) makes all University of Hawaiʻi campuses and properties tobacco and smoke-free locations. The law includes, but is not limited to, cigarettes, cigars, vaping apparatus, chewing tobacco and pipes.

CULINARY ARTS AND AGRICULTURE PROGRAMS HELP PROVIDE MEALS TO EVACUEES

Hawaiʻi Community College has partnered with The Salvation Army to provide meals to residents displaced by the Puna lava flow and Kīlauea ash eruption who are staying at emergency shelters in Pāhoa and Keaʻau. Hawaiʻi CC’s Culinary Arts program is preparing breakfast, lunch and dinner several days a week for approximately 300 people at each meal.
