TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) is a federally funded program designed to provide academic support and assistance to eligible students who are first-generation college students, low-income individuals, or those with a documented disability.
Our goal is to help you succeed academically, graduate from college, and achieve your educational and career goals!
To empower TRIO SSS participants to:
- Develop the necessary skills, knowledge, and attributes to complete a post-secondary education.
- Achieve maximum academic success, career readiness, and financial literacy.
- Graduate as skilled, self-actualizing professionals and global citizens who lead through best practices and lifelong learning.
- Academic advising and planning
- Peer mentoring, tutoring and academic support
- Financial aid and scholarship assistance

- Career and professional development
- Undergraduate school/university transfer preparation
- Skill-building workshops and cultural and social enrichment activities/events
Participants must meet one of the following criteria:
- First-generation college student (neither parent has a 4-year college degree)
- Low-income, as determined by federal guidelines
- Have a documented disability, verified through HawCC Disability Services
In addition, students are required to be:
- Admitted and enrolled at Hawaii Community College
- A U.S. citizen or legal permanent resident
- In need of academic support
TRIO students are expected to:
- Attend all mandatory TRIO SSS program orientations
- Attend/participate in a minimum of two (2) TRIO-sponsored workshops, activities, or events per semester.
- Check their UH email account on a regular basis to maintain communication with TRIO SSS staff
- Complete the FAFSA application and apply to at least one (1) scholarship per academic year, if applicable
- Strive for academic success – maintain a 2.0 or higher GPA
- Utilize available program or campus resources (e.g., tutoring, campus basic needs, or mental wellness services)
- Complete and submit required forms and evaluations on time
As a participant of the TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program, it’s important that you become financially literate, because going to college isn’t cheap. In addition to financial literacy workshops and events held each semester, we encourage TRIO members to keep track of their spending and learn skills to make effective and informed decisions about budgeting, saving, selecting/managing loans, investing, and much more.
