The purpose of this policy is to describe the College's grading policy. Background:
Background:
The College's practices in this area were reviewed by the Academic Senate in Spring 2002. The Senate's recommendations were submitted on March 11, 2002.
Additionally, HAW 5.302 describes the "N" grade in detail. HAW 5.303 describes the "I" grade. The policy on credit/no credit is HAW 5.503. The "W" grade is further discussed in the College's policy on Adding and Withdrawing from Courses (HAW 7.330).
In December 2015, UHCCP 5.302 was approved. This policy describes the transcription of credits earned for Prior Learning. Credits earned for Prior Learning by the use of the following assessment methods will be posted on student transcripts as institutional credit:
- Credit by Institutional Exam (CBIE) - Credit for Prior Learning earned by completing and passing a Credit by Institutional Exam will receive a grade of "CE" - Credit by Institutional Exam.
- Portfolio-Based Assessment (PBA) - Credit for Prior Learning earned by Portfolio-Based Assessment will receive a grade "PBA" - Credit by Portfolio-Based Assessment

Grade Points are given for all courses in which grades are reported. They are computed as follows: For each semester hour of a course, 4 grade points are granted if the grade is "A," 3 if "B," 2 if "C," and l if "D."Grade-Point Averages (GPA) are determined by dividing the total number of grade points by the total number of credits for which a student has received letter grades (excluding I, CR, NC, W, or N). The semester GPA is calculated using any one semester's credits and grade points. The cumulative GPA is calculated using all credits attempted and grade points earned at HawCC.
