Dr. Shmina holds a DNP from Wayne State University, an MSN with a concentration in Primary Care Nursing/FNP program from Michigan State University, and a BSN from the University of Michigan. Dr. Shmina has nearly 40 years of experience in caring for children, adults, pregnant women, and families with acute and chronic illnesses. As a Family Practice Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Shmina is certified by the American Nurses credentialing Center and has over 26 years of primary care provider experiences caring for very diverse populations across the country from patients on Native American reservations in Northern Michigan, to poor inner-city Detroit, New Orleans and Miami families and Dr. Shmina continues to practice part time. Dr. Shmina also has extensive experience treating mental health patients in both inpatient and outpatient settings, having subspecialities in Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety and Depression care. Dr. Shmina is a member of The American Psychiatric Nurses Association, and a former board member of the Nurse Practitioner Council of Collier County, Fl. She is a member of the Florida, Louisiana and Hawaii Nurses Associations, and the EPN Network for advanced practice.
Dr. Shmina has been a professor for over 20 years at Wayne State University, the University of Hawaii system, Ave Maria University, Barry University and Louisiana State University.
Dr. Shmina’s research interests include “increasing Breastfeeding rates in low income (WIC) women”, “Aroma therapy and hand massage as effective measures in relieving stress”, “Weight reduction in peri and post-menopausal women” “Increasing self-resiliency in the face of disasters”, “Simulation to increase critical thinking and clinical judgement in nursing students”, “Improving measurement of teaching and learning (Faculty evaluation) in nursing school using formative as well as summative evaluation measures”, Increasing mentorship and support for new and junior faculty to increase proficiency in teaching and learning”.
Dr Shmina is the Division Coordinator and Chief Nursing Officer at Hawaii community College.

- Aroma Therapy and hand massage decreases test anxiety and increases self-efficacy in Nursing Students and received a grant from STTI to complete this study, a poster presentation for this study was presented at the third annual St. John’s/Providence Holistic Nursing Conference in 2013. This was a national conference with Keynote speaker Jean Watson.
