English 255 - Types of Literature: Short Story and Novel

Course Description:  An introduction to two major types of English literature: the short story and the novel.  Students will read, analyze, and discuss works of fiction as well as learn how to apply principles of interpretation to other literary works.  The goal of the course is to help students achieve a greater understanding, appreciation, and enjoyment of literature.

 Upon successful completion of English 255, the student will be able to do the following: 

1. Understand the basic concepts and terminology of fiction and literary analysis;

    2.   Use these concepts and terms to analyze and discuss literature with understanding and appreciation; 

3. Recognize that literature expresses the deepest concerns of humanity as well as insights valuable across time;

    4.   Write about literature with clear and effective purpose, focus, organization, support, language, mechanics, and use of 

           sources.
