Ethan's World

My name is Ethan Spencer and I am a student at Hawai'i Community College in Hilo, Hawai'i. I am presently a Liberal Arts major making my way towards a double major which consists of both English and Philosophy. After taking English 103, a class which incorporates reading, writing, critical thinking, and the Internet, a classmate and I elected to further our studies by taking a directed studies course from Professor Birch Robison called English 299. I was challenged to create a semiotic dictionary, examine the semiotic and symbolic meanings of different alcoholic drinks, write a short story using semiotic references, and finally publish it all on the web. The links below will take you to each assignment. I hope you will enjoy yourself while learning something new.

A Dictionary of Signs and Symbols in Contemporary Culture

Semiotics and Alcoholic Beverages
This paper examines the characteristics of different alcoholic drinks and the messages they convey.

A Blossoming Rose
This is a creative short story based on the movie Citizen Kane.

More of my Work
This is a compilation of my different writing assignments most of which will always be "in" progress.

Cheryl's Semiotic Home page
This is a link to Cheryl Berg's home page, my classmate, whose research into semiotics is both informative as well as intriguing. Visit her site for a better grasp of signs, symbols, and semiotics.
