Prospective Student FAQ
How do I apply for school?
You are encouraged to drop
off or mail your completed system application form to the Admissions & Records
Office before August 1 (FALL) or December 1 (SPRING) for priority processing.
Applications are accepted up until the first week of classes. You will be
notified should additional documents be needed in order to process your
application.
If aid is needed, complete and mail the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Submit completed supplemental forms to
our Financial Aid Office.
Take a Placement Test.
Submit proof you are free of TB to the Admissions & Records
Office.
Where can I get a system application form?
Pick one up at the Manono Campus
at one of the following places:
Admissions & Records Office
Counseling Center
Information Center
If you are a high school student in the State of Hawai'i,
pick one up at your counselor's office.

Where can I apply for financial assistance
to help pay for my tuition and books?
Obtain the Free Application
for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) form, complete and mail it as soon as possible
in the accompanying envelope.
You may also submit your FAFSA online at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/
If you are eligible for financial aid, assistance may
be awarded a Pell grant, a tuition waiver, or college work-study. You may
be eligible to apply for a loan.
Be sure to submit the completed Hawai'i Community College
Supplemental Financial Aid forms as soon as possible to the Financial Aid
Office.
To apply for scholarships, check with the Financial Aid
Office, the Counseling and Support Services Center, or the Career Center
for information and application forms.
When do I pay for my tuition and fees?
Students are expected to pay
their tuition and fees at the time they register.
What should I do if I have a disability, and
want special accommodations?
Contact the Häßawi Kökua Program.
The office is located in the Counseling Center on the Manono campus, or
call (808) 974-7741 (TTY).
What is a Placement Test?
A placement test is given to
determine your level of reading, writing, and math. If your placement scores
do not meet the level needed to take credit courses, you will be asked to
consider a non-credit (PREP) program designed to raise your competency.

You may take PREP classes and college classes that do
not have reading, writing or math prerequisites at the same time.
Do I need to take the placement test if I
completed college level courses at another college?
You may be able to demonstrate
competency in reading, writing, and/or math by presenting a copy of your
transcript or grade report and the course descriptions to an academic advisor.
If you are unable to present the necessary documents to an advisor prior
to registration, it is advisable to go ahead and take the placement test.
Can the credits I earned at another college
be transferred to HawCC?
The process of evaluating credits
for transfer begins:
1. after you are registered,
2. when the HawCC Admissions and Records Office receives
an official copy of your transcript, and
3. course descriptions are available.
Where can I find information about significant
dates and deadlines?
The academic calendar shows
important dates and deadlines and is found in the HawCC college catalog
and the schedule of classes.

FAQ
What is SOAR?
SOAR stands for Student Orientation,
Advising, and Registration. After you receive your acceptance notice, you
will receive an invitation by mail notifying you of the date and time of
your S.O.A.R. session.
During SOAR sessions, new, returning, and transfer students
are provided with useful information about the college. This is your opportunity
to ask questions, discuss program requirements and register for classes.
By the end of orientation, you will have a printout of when and where your
classes will meet. It is very important to attend your scheduled SOAR session.
If you are unable to attend on the date/time you were assigned, call the
Counseling Office at (808) 974-7741 as soon as possible to reschedule.
What should I do if I'm uncertain about the
major I've selected?
See a counselor before you
register. If you've registered, go to the Career Center as soon as possible.
There you can explore your academic major and career options. The change
of major form is available at the Admission and Records office.
What are career and technical education programs?
Career and technical education
programs are designed to provide students with skills and competencies they
can use immediately upon entering the workforce.
What is Liberal Arts?
The Liberal Arts program is
designed to prepare students for transfer directly into a university level
baccalaureate program. It requires different levels of math, English reading,
and English writing than those in the career and technical programs. The
required courses for each of the programs/majors (degree or certificates)
are listed in the HawCC catalog.
What are pre-requisites?
Many classes require the student
to meet certain competency levels in the areas of reading, writing, and
math prior to taking a class. A pre-requisite is a course you must complete
before advancing t the next level.
What if I can't take the courses I need because
they're not offered this semester or the classes are full?
Look for alternative courses.
AS and AAS degree programs require general education courses. Check to see
if these classes are available.
What if I decide to stop attending a class?
You should officially "drop"
the class by submitting an Add/Drop form to the Admissions and Records Office.
An "F" grade is likely to result if you stop attending class and you do
not officially drop the class. Check the academic calendar for the deadline.
If it is the only class you are registered for, you need to submit a complete
withdrawal form to Admissions and Records. If you received financial aid,
you need to notify the Financial Aid Office of the action taken.
Is childcare available on campus?
The College's Children's Center, which is part of the
HawCC Early Childhood Education program, is located on the Manono Campus.

Are there job opportunities on campus?
Yes. See the student employment coordinator in the Financial
Aid Office (FAO) on the Manono campus. Job openings are posted on the bulletin
boards located outside the Financial Aid Office and the Learning Center
located on the first floor of the Mo'okini Library.
