PN General Information & Requirements

 

The Certificate of Achievement in Practical Nursing prepares students to take the National Council Licensure Examination for Practical Nursing (NCLEX-PN) to become Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). Licensed Practical nurses work in a variety of health care settings under the supervision of a physician or registered nurse. The Certificate of Achievement consists of 6 semester hours of non-nursing support courses and 34 semester hours of nursing courses; 40 semester hours in all. The program is 40 weeks long and includes 2 semesters and an 8-week-long summer session.

Entry Proficiency Level Requirements

Proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics is recognized as essential for a successful nurse. Proficiency levels in reading, writing, and mathematics are required to register for some or all of the Program courses:

  • Reading: Complete English 21 or test into English 102
  • Writing: Complete English 22 or test into English 100
  • Math: Complete Math 25 or 26 or test into Math 27

Admission Requirements to the Practical Nursing Program:

  • Test of Essential Academic Skills V (TEAS V) test scores.
  • Cumulative college GPA of 2.0 by the end of the spring semester prior to entry, if attended college previously.
  • Proficiency in reading, writing, and mathematics as evidenced by completion of courses or COMPASS placement test scores.
  • Applicants are selected for admission to the Practical Nursing Program using a point system based on TEAS V scores.
  • Qualified applicants who are deemed as Hawai‘i residents for tuition purposes are considered first for acceptance into the Practical Nursing Program; after which, qualified, non-resident applicants are considered on a space available basis.
  • Applicants for the nursing program need to be aware of the following regarding clinical agency requirements: Health care students are required to complete University prescribed academic requirements that involve clinical practice in a University affiliated health care facility setting with no substitution allowable. Failure of a student to complete the prescribed clinical practice shall be deemed as not satisfying health care academic program requirements. It is the responsibility of the student to satisfactorily complete affiliated health care facility background checks and drug testing requirements in accordance with procedures and timelines as prescribed by the affiliated health care facility.
