Hawai'i CC students, faculty to appear in Great Leaps Dance Concert

The popular “Great Leaps Dance Concert” will take place Friday, December 1 (preview show) and Saturday, December 2, both at 7:30 p.m. at the University of Hawai'i at Hilo Performing Arts Center. Over 150 dancers from the combined dance classes in the UH Hilo Performing Arts Department and the Hawaiʻi Community College Dance Program will perform 12 original dances to culminate the past semester of study. Highlights include a senior project by Performing Arts major Sarah Dunaway entitled “Mended,” and four special guest choreographers: Dori Yamada, Nadia Schlosser, Jeongha Kim and Trina Nahm-Mijo.

Trina Nahm-Mijo, Professor of Dance, Psychology, and Women’s Studies at Hawaiʻi CC will be showcasing her work “Kahuwai," an original mele which was composed 40 years ago by Thor Wold and Bailey Matsuda honoring the historical beachfront village near the easternmost point of Kumukahi which mysteriously "disappeared." The piece was last performed at Aunty Edith Kanakaʻole's last birthday celebration at the stadium a few months before she passed. It is performed by Kea Kapahua and Krisha Zane, cousins who have family from this area. The mele and the dance are gems that have been resurrected, reworked and re-imagined.

Tickets are open seating and prices are: $3 for the preview performance on Friday, December 1; $7 General, $5 Discount for UH Hilo/Hawaiʻi CC students (with a valid student ID) and children up to age 17 for December 2. Tickets are available by calling the UH Hilo Box Office at 932-7490, Tuesday – Friday 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., or ordering online at artscenter.uhh.hawaii.edu.
