IT STUDENTS GAIN VALUABLE EXPERIENCE THROUGH AKAMAI INTERNSHIP PROGRAM

Two Information Technology (IT) students participated in the Akamai Internship Program in the summer of 2017, which provided the students with valuable hands-on experience.

Christopher Roof interned at the Institute for Astronomy. He programmed using Python scripts to collect weather data and to store the results in a PostgreSQL database. He has been retained as a part-time observatory technician working on new projects in BASH scripting. He graduated from the Hawaiʻi CC IT program in May 2017 and is now a computer science major at the University of Hawaiʻi at Hilo.

Elton Nakagawa also received the Akamai Internship Award. He interned at Gemini Observatory where he developed a Mobile Solution Device Management system (MDM) to meet some of the needs for the remote management of the observatory's iOS devices. Nakagawa will receive his Associate of Science degree in Information Technology in May 2018. In conjunction with his associate degree, he will also be receiving a Certification of Achievement in Cybersecurity.
