3rd Annual Hawai‘i CC Day happening Friday, Feb. 26

Hawai‘i Community College will host the the 3rd Annual Hawai‘i CC Day on Friday, F­ebruary 26 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Manono Campus in Hilo.

The day will begin with a kīpaepae welina. Visitors can then spend time at the interactive exhibits presented by the college’s academic programs and student services.

Free, flexible online tutoring available for Hawai‘i CC students

Free online tutoring is available for Hawai‘i Community College students who want help with math, science or writing. Offered through the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa’s Online Learning Academy (OLA), the tutoring sessions are available during the day or after normal business hours.

Students can log into OLA’s online tutoring room as late as 10 p.m. and even on the weekends. The free one-on-one tutoring sessions use easy audio and text chat tools as well as interactive white board tools for drawing and writing.

Live music, food and more at the Pālamanui Open House & Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 27


Hawai‘i Community College – Pālamanui is pleased to announce that it will host an Open House and Grand Opening Celebration on Saturday, Feb. 27 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the new campus in North Kona. “Pālamanui opened for classes in August 2015, and now we are excited to welcome the community to the campus for a fun and celebratory event,” said Dr. Kenneth “Marty” Fletcher, the Director of Hawai‘i CC – Pālamanui. “Residents of West Hawai‘i worked very hard to turn the vision of this campus into a reality. We look forward to introducing them to their new home for higher education.”

Electronics students help reboot space shuttle flight simulator

During the past several months, a group of community partners, including Hawai‘i Community College Electronics Technology students, restored a space shuttle flight simulator that had been sitting unused and in disrepair at the Pacific Aviation Museum on O‘ahu.

On Thursday, January 28, which was the 30th anniversary of the explosion of the space shuttle Challenger, the flight simulator was unveiled during a ceremony at Kea‘au High School.

Hawai‘i Community College launched its new website on Monday, January 25, 2016 to provide a cleaner look, a better platform for celebrating the success of Hawai‘i CC students, and easier navigation for prospective students and other visitors.

Hawai‘i CC web developer Daniel Fernandez constructed the site in collaboration with members of the college Administration team, members of the college’s Strategic Enrollment Management team, the Office of External Affairs and College Relations, the University of Hawai‘i Community Colleges Marketing Committee, and others.

Fire Science and Diesel Mechanics students benefit from donated fire truck

Students in the Fire Science and Diesel Mechanics programs at Hawai‘i Community College (Hawai‘i CC) will have new opportunities for hands-on learning thanks to the generosity of the Honolulu Fire Department (HFD) and Young Brothers, Limited.

HFD has donated a surplus Type I fire engine that previously served the Pearl City community on O‘ahu. Now the engine will serve Hawai‘i Community College students, who will be able to use it during their coursework.


GIS students help map ancient trail at Hawai‘i Community College – Pālamanui

Hawai‘i Community College students who are studying global positioning systems (GPS) and geographic information systems (GIS) recently used their technology skills to help preserve part of an ancient Native Hawaiian trail.

The trail — which features petroglyphs, caves, and ancient lama trees — is next to the new Hawai‘i Community College – Pālamanui campus in Kona. Until recently the trail was overgrown with invasive fountain grass and forgotten.

Tickets on sale for Alumni & Friends Scholarship Fundraiser and 75th Anniversary Celebration

During academic year 2015-2016, Hawai‘i Community College is celebrating its 75th Anniversary. Hawai‘i CC will celebrate this milestone during annual campus events throughout the academic year, including at the “Hawai‘i Community College Alumni & Friends Scholarship Fundraiser and 75th Anniversary Celebration.” The fundraiser and celebration will take place Saturday, Nov. 7 at the University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Sodexo Dining Room from 6 to 9 p.m. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. The event will include a silent auction, door prizes, and entertainment, including a vintage fashion show by Hana Hou.

Hawai‘i Community College launches new Summer STEM Camp

Hawai‘i Community College (Hawai‘i CC) hosted a brand-new Summer STEM Camp June 15-26 in an effort to interest middle school students in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) with the ultimate goal of increasing the number of college graduates in Hawai‘i with expertise in STEM fields. Students engaged in hands-on experiences at the college campus and in the community as they learned about biology and astronomy.
