Mahiʻai Associate in Applied Sciencs Degree(A.A.S)

 

 

The A.A.S. Degree in Mahiʻai prepares students to understand the depth and breadth of Mahiʻai science that encompasses an interdisciplinary local and global knowledge base. This experience will allow the students to consider a wide variety of potential careers including but not limited to: environmental science, forestry, astronomy, anthropology, archaeology, biology, agriculture, art, music, education, social services, business, development, planning, and politics with an increased knowledge in traditional and contemporary Native Hawaiian ideology and practice.

This degree is not designed for transfer directly into a Baccalaurette program; however, it does include many transfer level general education courses. To earn this degree, students must:

  • Complete the required courses.
  • Earn a cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 as well as 2.0 in each of the major courses.
  • Earn the final 16 semester hours at HawCC.
  • Earn the Mahiʻai specific course credits (HawSt 160, 161,260,and 261) in residency.

 

Traditional Practice
The two-year Mahi`ai A.A.S. provides knowledge of the traditional and technical aspects of growing kalo, to perpetuate the cultural practices surrounding kalo cultivation and harvesting.


Modern Skills
The Mahi`ai program swill develop the student's skills in subsistence farming practices as well as tradiional food preperation.

Hands-On
Substantial course work will be in the field and students will be mentored by recognized practitioners.


Degree Objective
To provide an avenue for graduates to improve their employment and business opportunities with a deep and relevant expertise in Hawaiian culture.
