Class Participation: Based on the assigned reading or outside research prepare a handwritten (legible) or typed response to the assigned question as it appears on the course syllabus. Use very specific examples; names, dates, locations, events, organizations in your answer which should be a minimum two paragraphs in length.  All parts of your assigned question must be answered (written and oral) to earn credit. If you do not attend class and submit a written answer you will only earn partial credit.    

Group 1 "Practice What You Preach: A Lesson for Sustainable Living" 113-122.

1) Identify and explain Buddhist philosophy as related to the environment

2) How did this philosophy shape the values, beliefs and policies of leaders in Sri Lanka? 

3) What is the lesson of Sustainable Living and how is it being implemented today. Use the reading and some current internet research to answer this question.

Group 2  Story Earth, "Its a Long Way from Barpak to Kathmandu" 122-134/ "Listen to the Voice of the Indian Himalayas" 134-145.

1) Identify and explain the cultural, environmental and economic changes articulated by Padam Singh Ghaley  between the 1950s and 1970s in Barpark and Kathmandu.

2) Identify and explain the cultural, environmental and economic impact of development as articulated by Radha Bhatt.

3) Complete internet research and identify current environmental issues and organizations related to the Himalayas.

Group 1

Story Earth, "Let No Enemey Ever Wish Us Ill: The Hindu Vision of the Environment" 145-157 and " Return to Self-Reliance: Balancing the African Condition and the Environment" 157-171.

1) Identify and explain with very specific examples Hindu philosophy as it relates to the environment.

2) What recommendations does Karan Singh make to assist the international community in addressing global environmental issues?

3) Compare and contrast western and African ideology, theory and practice as explained by King Moshoeshoe II in relation to the environment, development and the role of tribal cultural traditions. 

Group 2

Story Earth "The Circle Closes In on the Nomads" 171-182/"The Nubians "They Built a Dam to Take Away Our River" 182-193, "Beyond the Last Line of Forest Trees" 193-200.

1) Identify elements of the Maasai creation story and specific cultural traditions that explain the beliefs and values of this African Tribe.

2) Identify the  values and traditions of the Nubian people and explain the significance of the Nile river within their culture.

3) Identify and explain the social/cultural and economic impact of the Aswan High Dam on the Nubian community.

Congratulations! Many of you completed two 8 week courses earning your 6 units of history in 18 weeks. you are an amazing group of scholars and its been a privilege to work with you. The best of luck to you in your educational goals and let me know if you need a letter of recommendation for transfer, scholarship or employment in the future.  Working with you this past 16 weeks has been the high point of my career and i want to thank you for your patience, dedication, hard work and constructive criticism that helped me grow as an instructor.
