    Zoom

    The University of Hawai‘i System will be virtually hosting the UH Transfer Day event on September 17, 2021 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m. via Zoom. 

    This “one-stop-shop” virtual event is designed to help UH community college students on their path to transfer to a 4-year university to complete their bachelor’s degrees. Eligible “Automatic Admission” students are also able to apply to UH Mānoa, UH Hilo, UH Maui College, or UH West Oʻahu with no application fee.

    Representatives from UH Mānoa, UH Hilo, UH Maui College, and UH West Oʻahu admissions offices, as well as individual programs/schools at the 4-year campuses will provide assistance with the “Automatic-Admission” application process, answer questions about college offerings, requirements, tuition and financial aid, and provide information about specific programs. Students are welcome to drop in anytime between 9 a.m. to  12 p.m. during the event.

    Hawai‘i Community College students, faculty, and staff who want to receive a COVID-19 vaccination can do so at the Manono Campus in Hilo August 25 and 26. 

    Hawai‘i CC is partnering with the KTA Super Store Pharmacy to host the vaccination clinics, which take place Wednesday, August 25 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and Thursday, August 26 from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. 

    The clinic will be located in Building 379, Room 1 (Kaneikeao)

    The vaccine to be administered at the clinic will be the Pfizer vaccine. Participants will receive a $10 gift card. 

    Hawai‘i CC and KTA will host a follow-up clinic at a later date for participants to get their second shot.

    Daniel J. Fraser works in the emergency department as a registered nurse (RN) at Queen's Medical Center in Honolulu. Daniel began working as an emergency department nurse shortly after graduating from university eight years ago with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. He describes it as a challenging job, but it's enabled him to travel and work in various locations including his home, the Canadian province of Nova Scotia, and the Oregon coast. He loves the lifestyle here in Hawaii and is looking forward to discussing the benefits and challenges of this career path with you.

    About our guest speaker:

    Cheryl Walthall is the executive director of the General Contractors Association of Hawai'i (GCA), the state’s largest construction association. The first female executive in the GCA’s 89-year history, Cheryl joined the GCA in 2019 and is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the organization’s operations. Cheryl previously held roles with Pacific Resource Partnership (PRP), which represents the Hawai'i Regional Council of Carpenters and over 240 member contractors, for more than 12 years, serving as director of strategic partnerships for the last two years. During her tenure at PRP, Cheryl was responsible for identifying opportunities for new alliances and developing strategies to expand their member contractors’ market reach.

    A graduate of the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, Cheryl is active in several construction industry and community organizations. She serves as a member of the Child & Family Service (CFS) Real Property Board and is a past chair of the CFS Guild. Cheryl is one of the founding members of Hawai'i Construction Career Days, serving on the board of directors and as co-chair of the sponsorships committee. Cheryl is also a past president of the Society for Marketing Professional Services Hawai'i.

She currently serves as a Leadership Council Member for the Hawai'i Community Foundation and on the mainland, Mayrose is an Ambassador and Legacy Member for Peninsula Open Space Trust. 

    Recently, Mayrose founded Kaunalewa, an economic revitalization organization for her hometown, Kekaha, and continues to guide entrepreneurs and future leaders. Mayrose is a graduate of the Hawai'i at Mānoa and Stanford University Graduate School for Business.

    The purpose of the workshops are to share this form of indigenous knowledge with the campuses and the wider community; to help preserve the tradition; and to promote indigenous health and wellness. Attendees of the workshops learn traditional Hawaiian chants, the mythology behind the chants, and the hei string figures that accompany them.

    This is an approved activity of the Mōkaulele Program, Office of the Chancellors University of Hawai‘i Hilo and Hawai‘i Community College. This is a collaborative project between the UH Hilo Office of the Chancellor Mokaulele Project, the Hawai‘i Community College Office of the Chancellor, Hawai‘i CommunityCollege Hawaiian Lifestyles Program, the UH Hilo Suicide Prevention Committee, UH Hilo Sociology Department, University of Hawai‘i at Hilo Student Association and Kīpuka Native Hawaiian Student Center in our endeavor to implement Hawai‘i Papa O Ke Ao, the system-wide plan for the University of Hawai‘i to become a model indigenous serving institution.

The Delano Manongs tells the story of farm labor organizer Larry Itliong and a group of Filipino farm workers who instigated one of the American farm labor movement's finest hours - The Delano Grape Strike of 1965 that brought about the creation of the United Farm Workers Union (UFW).
