Student Life
FUNdamentals:

photo Housing:  Hawai'i Community College students are welcome to live on-campus in dorms or apartments shared with UH-Hilo students. Availability is based on a first-come, first served reservation system and space is limited. Dorms are located on the Main Campus and a meal plan is required. For more information about housing options, please check out the UH-Hilo Housing site.

Getting Around Campus:  Hawai'i Community College shares campus facilities with UH-Hilo (a.k.a. Upper Campus). Common resources include the Library, The Learning Center, Housing, Classrooms, the Bookstore and parking. While all of your student services and some of your classes will be located on the Manono Campus, you may need to travel between campuses during the day. The preferred choice of transportation between campuses is driving, although walking or bicycling is a very reasonable option. The distance between campuses is less than half a mile. Of course, the challenge in Hilo is dealing with our rain! Outside of campus, stores and supermarkets are easily accessible and within a few miles of the dorms.

Employment:  Hawai'i Community College students have the option of obtaining off-campus or on-campus jobs while taking classes. For on-campus employment, students must be registered for at least 6 credits and maintain a 2.0 or better GPA. Some students may also qualify for "work-study" positions on campus through federal financial aid. For more information about on-campus student employment, contact the Financial Aid Office at (808) 974-7760. For off-campus student employment, students can utilize the HawCC Career Center (Manono Campus) for job search assistance, position listings and tips on preparing resumes and cover letters. Call (808) 974-7741 for the Career Center, or visit the HawCC Career Center section.

Health & Safety:  The Student Health Service is managed by a nurse/educator and provides first aid care, health education, advice on caring for illnesses, counseling on health related problems, tuberculin tests, and routine immunizations. Any student needing medical services will be referred to a physician in the Hilo area. In the event of an accident or emergency, Hilo Medical Center, located a few miles from campus, provides 24 hour emergency care. The Women's Health Clinic, located within Student Health, offers pelvic exams, diagnosis and treatment for sexually transmitted diseases, contraceptive methods, and pregnancy testing and counseling. Services are provided by a nurse practitioner at low or no cost to income eligible students.

The Student Health Center is located in the Campus Center Building, Room 212 and is open Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (808) 974-7636.

Hawai'i Community College is committed to providing a safe and healthy college environment for students, faculty, staff and guests. Security Officers patrol our campuses 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Campus Security is located on the Main Campus in the Auxiliary Services Building #300, Room 101, phone (808) 974-7911. Campus Security for Hawai'i Community College is provided by UH-Hilo. (more on Campus Security)

FUN!

Intramurals:  Intramurals is funded by the Student Activities fee and offers an extensive program for men and women. The three types of general activities available are team sports (basketball, volleyball, softball), individual and dual sports (tennis, golf, bowling, table tennis, badminton, cribbage and horseshoe throwing) and sport skills contests (punt, pass and kick, basketball free throw and golf putting). All students, faculty and staff are eligible to participate.

Student Government/Clubs & Organizations:  The Associate Students of University of Hawai'i-Hawai'i Community College (ASUH-HawCC) represents all students of the College. Its primary responsibilities include promoting good will, stimulating students to engage in purposeful curricular, and extracurricular activities, and to make positive contributions to the college and to the community at-large.

The Student Activities Council (SAC) presents a variety of programs for students in cultural, educational, recreational, and public affairs areas. Students with special interests may participate in campus activities through membership in the many clubs and organizations which are active during the academic year. For more information on Student Government, SAC, Clubs and the Board of Student Publication visit the Student Government site.
